I had gotten invited to a yelp event here, but couldn’t make it. That’s kind of how this place got on my radar. I “liked” them on Facebook and by following them I saw they had Pfriem on tap on this day and that’s what got me in restaurant. It’s true, I came for the Pfriem, and being a bar and all, I kind of just assumed the food will be mediocre bar food. It was worth it to me. I just lowered my standards and went for the beer.
There were 4 of us and we decided to order lots of sides and then each couple would share an entree. We wanted each of the sides, literally everyone of them. We finally had to have our server, who was awesome by the way, help us narrow down and tell us when to stop ordering.
We started with the Pork Carnita Nachos with pico de gallo, black beans, avocado crème, pepper jack and cheddar cheese. The avocado crème had just a little kick to it that was fantastic and this dish, despite being nachos, was NOT greasy, heavy or covered in cheese. It was the opposite. It had just enough cheese, but covered with toppings that actually made this dish. Huge chunks of pork carnitas too.
We also ordered the Butternut Squash Hushpuppies. They came with a citrus tofu crème with green apple, marinated onion and arugula salad. The salad was one of the best salads I have had in a long time! According to our server the dressing came from the marinated onions. I thought the Hushpuppies were just ok, but it’s because I am not a huge fan of Hushpuppies. I liked the flavor, but I think it’s a texture thing. Don’t worry our friend loved them and was happy not to have to share. None were wasted in this dinning experience.
We also ordered the Calamari. I guess I didn’t read the description very well, roasted jalapeño aioli with avocado and citrus salad with the grilled calamari. I was expecting the same ol greasy, deep fried calamari. I only ordered it because it was highly recommended. Instead it was grilled calamari steaks with a nice side salad. One order was clearly not enough for us, but we made do. Excellent dish!!
For our shared entree we went with the Grilled Coast Chicken. I am not a fan of chicken, so I just went with it, because again, it was highly recommended. It did sound great with crayfish and brie stuffed breast, polenta, braising greens and pepper coulis. Great does not describe this dish. This chicken dish was a festival of flavors going on in my mouth. By far best chicken dish I have ever had dining out. If all chicken dishes were that spectacular I might order more. I just wanted something super small for dessert so we wandered down to The Cheese Plate food cart and got Truffles.
- Atmosphere of this place is very industrial, yet cozy. It’s an old power station turned restaurant and they have lots of the power panels, fuses and things all around. Great piece of history.
- Pricing was great. The entrees were right about $13 each and came with sides and nice sized portions. As of May ’13 Monday is Happy Hour all night.
- Service was top notch. Our server loved the food they served and you could tell.
- Lots of beer on tap, good wine selection and lots of cocktails.
- The Station is located on NE Alberta St.
