I literally spent the evening EatingMyWayThru Hokusei and their 9 course meal. It’s not the first time I have eaten at Hokusei, which is why when I saw a Portland Food Adventures (PFA) for them, I knew I needed to jump on it. What was about to make this night special was getting talk with the Chef Ishii and have him explain some dishes and giving him a chance to show off, if you will. We were able to experience some dishes that aren’t on the menu, plus many that were. Some were just variations of what might be on the menu.
When you first arrive at any PFA you are greeted by a drink and some social time. That’s right PFA’s are all about meeting new people that love food as much as you. Once you have a drink you will find your way to a menu that will have your name on it, that becomes your tasting place for the evening, and those around you will become your new friends.
This was a night of dishes coming out and not stopping, I mean it was 9 courses after all. Each one a little different. One actually contained gold. I had never had that before, so that was a treat.
Chris Angelus, the brains behind Portland Food Adventures, takes time each PFA and talks about the restaurant and introduces the team. It’s just fun. Usually when you dine out you see everyone, but you never get to meet them and hear their story.
When I saw Sea Bass on the menu I got super excited. The first and last time I had sea bass was at another PFA. This one was incredible, nice and sweet but a soy sauce giving that sweet and salt taste.
The New York strip was fabulous. I won’t lie, it really tested my chop stick skills, but I would not give up until I ate every last bite of this amazingly tender dish. Not only was it tender, but it burst with flavor. Everyone at our table agreed it wasn’t enough, we all wanted more, lots more of this dish.
Even though the steak was fabulous, the dish I was most excited about was the assorted fish with rice. Chef Cody was cutting up fish, not just some fish, like 7-8 different kinds of fish. After this meticulous work was done he took it in the back and came out with this gem. By now I was stuffed, but I didn’t care. And if I thought the steak was making me master my chop sticks, the rice would really test me. I didn’t care, I would finish this. It was a little embarrassing as I did power through this dish. FANTASTIC!!! There is something similar on the menu, but we all told them to add this dish.
Every dish was great. The company was good, the drinks that were paired with every single dish were also very good and a fun variety. Overall it was another very successful Portland Food Adventure.
If you are interested in checking this restaurant and want to know what it’s like on a normal night check out my review. We loved this place. All the info you need is on the post.
For now, I need to go for run so I can be ready for my next Eating adventure, because I am sure there will be more. Be sure to check out Portland Food Adventures for upcoming events. The next one looks pretty awesome, so grab your ticket before it’s too late.
