Tasty n Sons

You have no idea how many times we have driven by this place, and saw the line out the door and knew we would just need to try another time. This place is very popular, it always makes the “Portland Must Try” lists and has an overall great reputation for breakfast and dinner. Yet we have somehow never been.

I won’t lie, sometimes I don’t like to wait for over an hour for dinner, even if I know it’s going to be worth it, so we actually had a plan on the day we went. We decided to go an hour before we were ready to eat. Instead what we found the perfect time to hit Tasty n Sons. Sundays, they start seating for dinner at 5:30. The place was completely empty. It did fill up in about half an hour, but the whole time we were there we saw seating for 2 in a few spots. Even when we left there was no one waiting and that was close to 7pm. We asked our guy and he said this was the best time to come. That’s my tip of the day for you.

Everything is served family style here. We started with a few small plates, then grabbed a few large plates and a side and finished it off with a small dessert.

Bacon Wrapped Dates

Great way to start a meal.

Bouillabaisse

Bouillabaisse

Bouillabaisse is a seafood stew. This one had white cod, octopus, lots of big shrimp, potatoes, bacon and these bread sticks that had great spread on them.

Pork Chop with Bacon Jam

Pork Chop with Bacon Jam

This chop is first put in a brine, then cooked to perfection(they did let us know because it was a 16oz chop it would take about 25 minutes to cook). It was tender, juicy and the added bacon jam made this one of the best pork chops in Portland.

Brussels Sprouts

Brussels Sprouts and caramelized Onions

I’m a huge sucker for Brussels sprouts. If they are on the menu chances are you will see them on my plate. These were sauteed, tossed with a little cream sauce, along with the caramelized onions, this dish was slightly sweet. They were fantastic. I have never had any prepared this way. I love when restaurants get creative and take food to the next level, especially something as common as Brussels sprouts.  I could have eaten another plate of these and I barely shared this plate as it was.

Chocolate Potato Doughnut from Tasty and Sons

This was the perfect ending to our meal. Just something small and I mostly loved that they were not super sweet.

    • Atmosphere was very alive and vibrant. This place is hoppin’. I love that the windows fling wide open in the spring, summer and fall.
    • Pricing was about $10 for small plates and $19 for large plates on average. Everything you saw pictured plus 3 cocktails cost us $89 and we were very full.
    • Service was spectacular. Our guy checked in often, suggested things to try and knew the menu really well.
    • They had a few beers on tap, wine and a good cocktail selection. Cocktails were about $8 each.
    • Tasty n Sons is located on N Williams Ave.

  1. Like you, I don’t want to wait over an hour to get a table anywhere. So I didn’t go to Tasty’s for a long time. I went on a whim last year and there was no wait. Like mid-week and after 7pm.

I remember not being overly impressed with the food. Definitely not worth standing in line for. I do remember loving the bacon wrapped dates. Those were amazing. The Brussels sprouts you got look right up my alley!!!
