If you are familiar with the food cart scene at all you most surely have heard of Tiffin Asha. She’s been in Portland Monthly, Willamette Weekly and Oregonian, just to name a few. What she has to offer is so different people are intrigued and ready to try it. She just recently moved to a new location, but at her old location is was not unusual to see quite a few people, waiting, eating and enjoying.
The menu is small and to most it is somewhat foreign, since it is from India after all, but the owner is quick to offer help and answers and descriptions. She loves what she has to offer and you can tell. You can’t go there without getting a dosa. These are thin crepes made of fermented rice and dal and they are the base to many of her dishes. We have tried 2 different ones on different stops. She offers one that is stuffed with cinnamon potatoes, which was my daughters favorite, and the other is stuffed with a pakora fried chicken, known as the Hot Chick, which was my favorite. The dosa’s are large in size and they are served cut in half so they can be easily shared. The flavors are so different, like nothing I have ever had, so I loved the adventure of trying these.
There are more things on the menu I would like to try, but the day we were there she had a special which was sweet potato + onion pakora with buttered hazelnuts & tamarind-raisin chocolate sauce. This dish was fantastic. I love experiencing flavors I have not experienced before and that is what Tiffin Asha offers.
So don’t be scared off by the menu, let this be the day you venture out. There are still a few more things that I want to try, so I will be back and I will continue to Eat My Way Thru her menu. Remember that she does offer weekend specials like I wrote about, so what I ate might not be on your plate.
- Atmosphere is great on Mississippi Ave. There is not a lot going on at the pod, but it provides lots of people watching for sure. There are quite a few tables to sit at and a tent to keep the rain off.
- Pricing is $5-$7 for a Dosa and they are large.
- Service is great. She is super helpful and really wants you to enjoy what she has to offer.
- Tiffin Asha is located on the corner of Mississippi and Beech.
