We ordered the wrap and the bowl. Falafel… something that I have tried numerous times and each time I’m walk away thinking “that was just ok.” The owner of Chickpeadx contacted me right after they opened. I’ll be honest, I wasn’t in a hurry because I’m not a huge fan. They are now located inside The Zipper, which is great place by the way. I knew there would be other [Read more…]

Seriously don’t know how it has taken me so long to discover this place, but I will tell you right now it’s a favorite. I had my mind made up before I even got there. I wanted the Green Bean sandwich. But the menu!!! It’s crazy! The options of goodness roll off the board making you feel like you should order 2 sandwiches each. We managed to contain ourselves, well kind of.

Thanks to all your awesome input I ended up at Interurban’s weekend brunch. It’s always a gamble when you go to bar for brunch, especially when you are greeted with, “What will you be drinking? I’m guessing something boozy since this is a bar?” I don’t think we disappointed her too much when we said tea and coffee. Nonetheless we looked over the menu briefly before making some of the most excellent decisions.
I, of course, got the Eggs Bennies and my husband got the Campfire Skillet with smoked trout. The prices were so reasonable and she said that his wasn’t huge, so we went ahead and tagged on the [Read more…]
We had been for dinner at Old Salt Marketplace and we were wowed. When we saw that they were starting to offer breakfast, we knew we needed to get there.
There were no Eggs Benedicts on the menu, but I saw plenty of things I would like to try. Since our visit I did see they have added Eggs Benedicts, so we will be back. My husband got a special hash and I got the smoke trout omelet. Before they brought out our food we thought we would at least try something small to start the meal off. So we opted for [Read more…]
I took a whole month and I did EatingMyWayThruPortland Cheap Eats style. Sometimes you just don’t want spend a fortune to eat out, but yet you still want good food. I know I do, so I have compiled a list from my whole month plus all the great places I had already been to. Watch for future Cheap Eats here. I will post them as soon as I find them.
Let’s begin by clarifying by what I mean by Cheap Eats?
I want good quality food, with a decent portion size, for under $10. You might think the only place to get this cheap fare would be at a food cart or even an “order at the counter” restaurant, but that’s not entirely true. Yes, I have listed food carts and counter service restaurants, but I have also included a wine shop. [Read more…]

P’s & Q’s Market
As I pointed this place out, my husband drove right on by. I made him turn around and head back. I had read great things about this place and I wanted to check it out even if it didn’t meet his “fancy” standards. Crazy guy, he should trust me by now. I should let you know that it doesn’t look bad and it’s not in a bad part of town, it’s more nondescript. That all changes once you walk in the door. This place is [Read more…]

Cheese & Crack Snack Shop
I’m a sucker for presentation and it was photos of their presentation that won me over. I mean look at that! How impressive is that? And it’s part of my Cheap Eats series. That makes it even better. Cheese and Crack is a food cart gone brick and mortar. I never made it out to their cart even though I had intentions to get there. I do love that I was able to order drinks with my cheese plate, so maybe waiting wasn’t so bad after all.
I kind of wished I had a photo of their stuff ready and loaded so all I would have to do is say, “I want that”. Instead I fumbled through the menu trying to figure out what looked like what I had seen on Instagram. (I know I should have just stopped and searched right there.) I asked a few questions, but ultimately the decision was up to me. I won’t lie, I really like it when [Read more…]

Oso Market + Bar
Oso Market is another new comer to the Portland food scene. This place is a perfect candidate for my Cheap Eats series because this is a great place, with delicious food at an affordable price. If you think Cheap Eats can only happen at restaurants where you order at the counter or food carts (which are both fabulous places by the way), think again. Oso Market will show you how it’s done. Another thing that really caught my attention and made me really take notice was when they did a [Read more…]

Shut Up and Eat
Finally I made it to Shut Up and Eat. They post great pics and people really talk about this place, so I knew we needed to get there. I’m pretty sure it’s this place that shared a picture of a city bus stopping in front of their place, the driver got out, ordered a sandwich and then got back on the bus and drove away. (There is not stop here and apparently no place to park a bus.) A big plus too, is this place actually works really well for my Cheap Eats series and I’ll tell ya why. It’s priced really well, and the sandwiches are HUGE.
I really wanted to go for a breakfast sandwich because I heard they made their English Muffins in house. Luckily they serve the breakfast sandwiches all day. After a few questions and suggestions I settle on the [Read more…]

The Italian Market
The day we came we made sure we had our son in tow too. You see, I knew we would want to order more than 2 sandwiches. I had my eye on a few of them, but didn’t want to order more than we could handle. Like I would ever do that. This food cart has brought food from Philadelphia, but they didn’t just bring cheesesteaks. Nope, they brought all the other good stuff too. [Read more…]

Happy Sparrow Cafe
We actually had friends that told us we needed to stop at this place. Funny thing is we had walked past it the week before when we were leaving Accanto. Not knowing what it was, my husband poked his head in and asked what Kolaches were. They are dough stuffed with all kinds of goodies. You have your sweet options like Poppyseed and cinnamon (the way the Czech’s make them) all the way to savory with Ham & Cheese and Smoked Salmon with cream cheese and capers (the way the Texan’s make them).
We were intrigued, but full from breakfast. Fast forward a few weeks [Read more…]

I’m a sucker for food carts. You get such great food for an affordable price. When I saw this burger cart open up, I knew I needed to try it out. Plus, when the sun is shining in Portland you just want to sit outside.
We tried 4 sliders and an order of fries. The special caught our eye right away and since it was only going to be around for one more day, we took advantage of it. It was Angus beef patty topped with blue cheese crumbles, rosemary balsamic onions, crispy bacon, and arugula on brioche. It was very tasty, I loved the combination of flavors on this. [Read more…]

I went here with a friend and loved it so much I have already been back a second time. So you will get to see some dining options. I just ask that you don’t judge us. For those of you that have been to Teote, you know where I’m going with this, for those of you that have never been, well you will get to see all the stuff we ordered.
You can’t miss the place with it’s bright blue front. It stands out and calls your name. You enter to a modest looking place with little seating. You walk up to the counter and place your order.
I ordered Teote Plate with your choice of El Diablo, Smokey Pollo, Pabellón, Chorizo or Pernil, served with beans, rice, salad, fried plantains & buttered arepa. I asked him which one I should order and without hesitation he said [Read more…]

Cheap Eats in the burbs…
It seems like the only cheap eats you can get in the burbs is fast food or some kind of chain. Those are not what I would consider good food. Cheap yes, but not good. I want Cheap Eats that are really good.
I love this Thai place and have wandered out here more than once. My husband is not a huge fan of Thai food, so it always takes some convincing. Luckily for me on our last visit we sat next to some ladies that had ordered the Yum Crispy Balls. It looked really good and they said we had to try a bite, so they grabbed our little plate and put a spoonful on for us to try. Too bad we had already ordered that day, but for me it secured [Read more…]

I am taking the month of April and I am doing a Cheap Eats Series. I am starting the month off with Grassa.
I have kind of heard mixed reviews on this place so we entered cautiously. Thought we would at least check them out and see what they had to offer and hope for the best. We just so happen to go during an off time, kind of an early dinner. Ok, it was really early, I guess we are preparing for retirement with our 4:30 dinner. It gave us an opportunity to talk with one of the guys there. As you walk in you order at what looks like a hostess desk then you take a seat.
I ordered the Carbonara, not because it came with an egg, but mostly that was the reason, I love eggs on pasta. I also ordered it because it had pork belly in it. My husband got the Mezze Rigatoni or the Sunday Ragu. We also ordered a salad to share while we waited for our pasta. My husband let me pick whatever salad I wanted, then pretty much turned it over when he realized it had roasted sweet potatoes in it. Pretty strategic on my part, wouldn’t ya say? [Read more…]

Red Hills Market
I love this place. We have been a few times, but on this visit we brought friends who had never been before. When you talk about how amazing the food is and describe how it really is gourmet food, it is always a surprise when people enter and see that you order at the counter. This just adds to the mystic of the whole place. While you wait in line there is plenty to look at. They have books, and all kinds of local condiments, sauces, jams, salts, and whatever else you can think of. It”s kind of like playing I spy. Especially on this day because I was looking for [Read more…]
A year ago, when I went to Lardo, I discovered the Banh Mi. I began to notice that many places offered them and each had their own varieties or even specialties. When I asked you, my readers, where I should go for my next Banh Mi, Lela’s Bistro was on everyone’s mind. Since it came so well recommended I knew I needed to try it.
I love that Lela’s Bistro is located in an older house off of NW 23rd right across from the new St. Jack location. You walk up the wooden steps, onto the large porch and past the [Read more…]

For those of you that have passed by Lauretta Jean’s because it’s just a pie shop, I need to know what were you thinking? It’s PIE! Second, it’s not just a pie shop, there is so much more or at least I had heard. I was on a mission to find out. This place is just darling, so I chose to invite Debbie from Sweet Bliss to join me. I knew she would enjoy the atmosphere way more than my husband, which she did by the way. [Read more…]

I was told I needed to go down and try the breakfast sandwiches at Bare Bones Cafe. I grabbed a friend and we made our way over to check out these goodies. Baby Doll Pizza
I love traditions that go along with the holidays. You know the big meal at Thanksgiving, which includes some kind of sweet potatoes and green bean dish. I also love a very simple Christmas Eve tradition that we had growing up. Pizza for Christmas Eve. To some of you this might sound plain or boring, but for us it was a treat. First off, I was a farmers daughter out in the middle of nowhere, so there was no pizza joint nearby. Second, [Read more…]

I was meeting up with someone for breakfast. We wanted some place new, but not down in the hustle and bustle of downtown(Sometimes, I like a little slower pace). After some research I came up with this place. We decided on a meeting time and we were all set. Then I put it into Google maps, and I was a little concerned. I was afraid I was taking us to [Read more…]

Koi Fusion is a food cart of sorts. It sits at Bridgeport in Tigard in one of the kiosks and serves the crowd that is wanting something fast and fresh as opposed to the many other sit down restaurants.

It’s Korean food served in burritos and tacos. [Read more…]
