Laurelhurst Market is supposed to be THE good steakhouse in Portland. I have checked out the menu a few times, and love that it’s always changing with the seasons as far as their sides go.
When you say “Steakhouse”, everyone’s first thought is Ruth’s Chris, which is fine if you want to spend that kind of money on one meal when you could have dinned at 3-5 great Portland restaurants on the same amount. Not me, I don’t like to spend that kind of money on ONE meal. Or on one meal that has nothing fresh and local.
So we made our way to Laurelhurst, in search of a great steak. We made reservations, got there a few minutes early and were seated in the bar. I was super excited when I saw Pfriem on the menu. I talked to the head bartender that said he had tasted all of the Pfriem beers and told them as long as he was in charge, there would always be Pfreim on tap at Laurelhurst Market. That made me happy, as this is my favorite beer right now.
Our seat was ready rather quickly, so we gathered our stuff and went outside. I will skip all the boring details and just tell you this, service was awful, which seems to be a theme on their reviews. Now on to the good stuff. I ordered the Pork Chop, he said it would take awhile, so we told him we wanted to order apps to keep the food coming while we waited for the chop.
The Sear Scallop with Morcilla Sausage, Avocado Puree & Beet Chips, Grapefruit Vinaigrette, Local Mache, was not only fabulous but the presentation was stunning. There were so many flavors and textures running through this small dish. There is not a lot of scallop, but it’s worth trying.
The pomme frittes were perfect, especially with the dipping sauce, and they were a great appetizer as we patiently waited for our meals to arrive. The Parisienne Gnocchi which was gratineed with Cauliflower & Cream was fantastic, and it was a perfect combo to my pork chop.
The Pork Chop and steak finally arrive after nearly an hour of waiting. I have to say my pork chop was just ok. I was not super wowed by it. I did love the sides that it came with. I thought my husbands steak was really good and his sides that came with the steak were super good, making it a complete meal.
I think if we do go back, and I am sure we will, we will sit at the bar, where we had great service and order lots of sides, which were not only fantastic, but affordable and order a ribeye to share. That’s my plan, maybe not my husbands plan, but it’s mine plan for us.
- Atmosphere was very busy, loud and bustling. We did sit outside, so we didn’t have as much of that.
- Service was not good at all. It was not just us, it was also the tables around us. Just be prepared.
- Pricing for this kind of steak house is really well priced. Our entrees were $23 each and they came with sides.
- They have lots of beers on tap, good wine selection and a full bar.
- Laurelhurst Market is located on E. Burnside.
