It’s crazy that we hadn’t been here before. It’s not all that far from us and we are always trying to find some good food in the burbs. We had stopped in one time and the wait was over an hour, so we moved on. That should have clued us in. This time we showed up right as they were opening and grabbed a table quickly.
The menu is overwhelming and we weren’t even really sure where to start and our server said he would order for us. For me he ordered a puff pastry stuffed with chicken. For my husband he ordered the Lamb Shank with a savory sauce of artichoke and peas and added olives I believe. He also told us we needed to order the Moroccan Hot Mint Tea by the pot and had us order a medium sized pot. He also said we really needed to try this dessert that took about 20 minutes to cook. Of course we said yes, it was our first visit after all.
Then the food started coming…..
First the tea, then the hummus plate,
quickly followed by a lentil soup. It was such a pleasant dining experience.
Just when you think your main dish is coming out, out comes something else. This time a 4 salad sampler with potatoes, carrots, green beans and cucumbers.
Finally our entrees arrive. Mine was a beautiful presentation. It was very savory on the inside, yet topped with powdered sugar all that separated by flaky crust. I do not remember the name of this dish, but it was a suggestion by our server, so just ask. Plus he said it was very authentic. It was such a crazy good combination of sweet and savory.
The Lamb shank came out and it was a beautiful presentation. The meat was fall of the bone tender and the most amazing, rich flavor ever. You scoop it up with pita bread and enjoy. We shared both dishes and we had powdered sugar, flaky crust, and drips from out lamb all over. Our guy said this is always how it looks when you share, it’s part of the experience. Haha, thanks for making us feel better about our “feeding time at the zoo” mess we had made.
By now we are so full and we know we have dessert coming and there was no stopping it. It was the same presentation as one of our dishes with the pastry crust, but filled with warm fruit. The plate looks like a beautiful piece, but actually everything on the plate was drawn on with syrup. You might be wondering how it was? It was divine.
This place is so good I have already been back and taken a friend with me.
- Atmosphere was a great Moroccan theme throughout and very cozy.
- Pricing? Our whole entire meal, with all those courses and dessert was $53. For a whole experience, plus exceptional food, we felt like that was a steal.
- Drinks here are authentic Moroccan teas, lemonade choices and soda pop. No wine or beer here, but I didn’t miss it at all.
- Service was great. Our server was knowledgeable and helpful, plus the owner came out a few times and checked on us.
- Dar Essalam is located in Wilsonville.
