I can’t tell you how many times I have walked past this place and said
“That’s on my list!”
So you can imagine how funny it was to sit outside and watch people walk by and say
“We need to go here.”
The menu is so incredibly different that I just kept walking past it time and time again. But not this day. I told my husband this would be a stretch, but we were going to give this place a shot. Luckily for us we had the best server EVER. He loved his job, he loved the food there and wanted you to love it just as much as he did.
He basically told us what each dish was like, including the ingredients, since many are not common to us. He described how they would be presented and also suggested some we needed to try, plus his personal favorites. But it didn’t stop there. Once the dish came out he explained again, what it was and what the ingredients were. I know this might sound like overkill, but 2 things here. One, I hadn’t heard of some of the things and two, I didn’t even remember them after he left.
All that to say, here is what we had at Aviary…
We enjoyed this dish and realized we really really like Lychee. We enjoy all kinds of sashimi, so this dish wasn’t a stretch for us.
I love beets, so this was a huge hit with me. My husband tries beets with me and he does love the beet salad from Amercian Local, but this one was almost too much beet for him. I wasn’t sad about that at all.
This dish of pork belly katsu with shisito peppers, green apple, plum sauce was so good. Pork belly can be iffy sometimes. You never know if you are going to get all fat or just some fat. This one was mostly incredibly tender meat.
This dish came highly suggested and I am glad we went with it. It was veggies I am used to, but prepared with seasonings I wouldn’t normally use and the black olive cake was quite intriguing in this dish. I loved it.
Before you completely judge me, you must know we didn’t end up liking the pig ears, but the coconut rice, chinese sausage, avocado salad on top were really good. We ate a few ears before we couldn’t do it any more and then we just pushed them aside. We will try anything. We won’t be mad if we don’t like it, we just like the adventure. We still thoroughly enjoyed all the other components of the dish.
So you might be wondering our overall take on this restaurant. Everything was great. Great presentation, great service (some of Portland’s best right here) and great food. But…. in the end it’s just not what we enjoy. I think we both left feeling this way. The food was not bad, it’s just everything was such a stretch from what we normally order. I do suggest if you are adventuresome that you try this place. It’s a popular place, so as you can guess many people love this. It’s not often we leave a place going that was really good, but I just don’t think I could do it again.
What are your thoughts? Have you been here yet?
- Atmosphere is quite modern and simple. Great outdoor seating and a very, very cool bar area.
- Prices were about $14-$16 on everything we ordered.
- Drink list was large with cocktails, wines and beer.
- Item you must order is the Beet Salad. Presentation is pretty dang cool.
- Aviary is located in NE Portland.
